MONOCHROMATIC & PRIMARY COLORS | How To Wear It

MONOCHROMATIC & PRIMARY COLORS | How To Wear It

I have been so inspired by extreme streetwear brands, one in particular being Off-White by Virgil Abloh. Off-White is a super industrial, everyday-items-into-fashion type of brand, and I am absolutely obsessed. I love where streetwear is going because there is so much room for experimentation, creativity, and it’s okay to rock clashing primary colors. Bolder is better, and it looks super hard core. For this look, I really channeled my inner hypebeast and threw my own twist into it (denim on denim, it’s classic). I paired a matching beanie and long sleeve crewneck tee from J. Crew with this massively oversized Lee’s denim jacket that I thrifted, and my go-to high rise cigarette jeans from Reformation. To accessorize, I cinched the waist of my jacket with this super cool colorblocked D-ring belt, classic Chanel sunglasses, and this beautiful bright yellow leather bag that I picked up from J. Crew. The key to colorblocking with monochromatic colors like electric blue and bright yellow is to keep it concise. I tied in the shirt with the beanie, the bag with the belt, and brought the whole look back down to earth with staple pieces, such as high rise jeans and a denim jacket.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING | 100 Things to be Thankful For

Happy Thanksgiving, readers!

This is my third holiday season with this blog, and sharing my life with you, and for THAT I am thankful. Today is a day that is commonly associated with turkey, stuffing, and football, and trust me, I’m not mad about any of those things, but I am a firm believer in taking a moment to step back and acknowledge how many things that we have been blessed with in this life. In this season of my life, I have been focusing on #PositivitySeeking, and filling my heart and mind with things that are uplifting rather than things that worsen anxiety or cause unnecessary feelings of negativity. This life is far too short and far to rare to be spent worrying. So, in celebration of this Thanksgiving and to continue seeking positivity, I am going to share 100 things on my heart that I am thankful for, and I encourage you to do the same!

  1. First and foremost, I am thankful for everything that the Lord has done in my life. When I think about everything that I have encountered in my life, every trial, every high, every low, there is no way to deny the existence of an amazing, loving God.
  2. I am thankful for my family. My mom, who has denied herself a thousand times to put myself and my sisters first; my sisters, who have been by my side no matter what. I am thankful for my girl gang that I get to call my family, and the unwavering support that they have shown me.
  3. I am thankful for my friends, my very best friend in the whole world, Gillian, and for all the support and laughter that she brings me. Gil, you’re my twisted sister for life, my funky thrifting partner, and I am so thankful that God gave me a fourth sister! And to everyone that I have become close with in this season in my life, I am so grateful for the impact that each and every one of you have had on my heart.
  4. I am thankful for my silly roommate, and the fun and liveliness that she brings to our little room! Bails, you are literally the best ever and I am so happy that I get to live with you!
  5. I am thankful for my school, and the opportunity that I have to get an education in something that I am extremely passionate about.
  6. I am thankful for coming home over Thanksgiving break and being able to curl up on the couch on a weekday morning and watch The Real Housewives of Atlanta.
  7. I am thankful for my mushy little cat, Perry, whom many of you have without a doubt seen on my Instagram stories.
  8. I am thankful for creativity and being able to express myself through different mediums, and the community that creativity builds.
  9. I am thankful for thrift shopping. Are you kidding me? Heck yeah, I am thankful for thrift shopping. I have found some of my most treasured pieces while thrifting.
  10. I am thankful for reality television. It may be insanely staged, but hot dang, it is so nice to come home at the end of the day and veg out with my sisters with some Bravo.
  11. I am thankful for this stage of my life and how much I have been able to grow, learn, and work towards becoming the best version of myself.
  12. I am thankful for the next stage of my life, and the next, and the next.
  13. I am thankful for the smell of cooking a bangin’ Thanksgiving meal, and the atmosphere that Thanksgiving brings.
  14. I am thankful for late nights at college with my friends, and endless laughter.
  15. I am thankful for pulling a Grey’s Anatomy and “dancing it out” in a messy dorm room to relieve stress.
  16. I am thankful for all of the opportunities that I have been given, most recently with Mogul and College Fashionista. It is a major blessing and honor to be able to partner with such incredible companies.
  17. I am thankful for my health and my family’s health.
  18. I am thankful for having Christmas decorations up early!
  19. I am thankful for trips to the Humane Society, and being able to go play with some kittens and puppies in our free time.
  20. I am thankful for makeup, and for how much fun it is to be able to express myself through makeup.
  21. I am thankful for days when I get to sit in my pajamas all day and relax.
  22. I am thankful for busy days when I feel productive and I am able to get loads of things done (homework, homework, and more homework).
  23. I am thankful for forgiveness.
  24. I am thankful for everyone that I have not met yet, and for the impact that they will have on my life and in my heart.

MODE FILLE FRANÇAISE | How to Rock French Girl Fashion

MODE FILLE FRANÇAISE | How to Rock French Girl Fashion

If you’ve seen my “Recently Listened To” on Spotify, you’d see the Marie Antoinette (directed by Sophia Coppola) movie soundtrack, and that soundtrack has me feeling all kinds of ways. I tend to dress like what I listen to, and recently it’s been “Moi Je Joue” by Brigitte Bardot on repeat, and I’m totally not mad about it. The “it-girl” French fashion trend has us all wanting to glamorously stroll down the street to pick up a fresh baguette at a local café while rocking a beret and a neck scarf, but sometimes you have to make do with what you have! This weekend my city had a J. Crew warehouse sale, and after digging and digging through boxes of sample clothing from past catalog shoots, returned clothing, and random partnership pieces, I stumbled upon this glorious Millennial pink wool beret. To say my heart stopped beating is an understatement of just how excited I was to have found this treasure. To add to the excitement, it was only $8.00! The inner French girl in me was absolutely beaming at this find, and instantly I knew that I would be sporting this piece way more than I should.

I wanted to incorporate this gem into a wearable look, not just for an editorial shoot or for my annual holiday lookbook (which is coming up, by the way, so keep an eye out for the theme!), but something that I could wear to class and out in everyday life…because a non-French French girl has to be authentic, right? I paired this beautiful wool beret with a silk navy and white wide-leg jumpsuit with an amazing star pattern all over it, and layered the jumpsuit over a black turtleneck (because it wouldn’t be a LEWK without my “second skin”), and these amazing La Canadienne leather boots that I thrifted!

(And YES, I am blonde now! If you want to read all about it and see how I care for my blonde locks, read it here!)

Back and Blonder than Ever – Everything I Learned and Everything I Wish I Knew

Back and Blonder than Ever – Everything I Learned and Everything I Wish I Knew

So I’ve been planning on going back to blonde for about a year now (If you creep way, way, way back on my Instagram, you’ll find it), but like many of us, I was coming up with reasons why I should put it off. Mostly it was a bit of PTSD from the last time I went blonde which was an absolute disaster. I originally wanted silvery grey hair, so I went in to get it done and the hairdresser ended up just completely botching it up. There were spots with red in it, spots with my natural, mousy-brown hair color showing through, lavender, and even blue patches. After a bit of a panic attack, I went back in to get my hair corrected. It took about five hours and I still walked out with an odd-shade of silver. I was sort of happy with it…until I washed my hair and the toner washed out in the shower. Then I was left with an odd cluster of blonde highlights. From there I just kept lightening my hair and ended up trying to bleach my own roots (they turned about the same shade as a brand new penny), and finally just threw in my towel, raised the white flag, called it quits and dyed my hair back to brown. It’s been brown ever since…up until Saturday.

My impulsiveness showed itself once again! My mom and little sister had a hair appointment Saturday afternoon, and I woke up that morning with the urge to just go ahead and go blonde that day. It all worked out and I was able to squeeze in an appointment with my miracle-worker hairdresser. It took about three hours in a salon chair, to the sink, back to the salon chair, back to the sink, and a hair treatment worn home. In the end, I am ridiculously happy with how my hair turned out, and I am so excited to continue in the lightening process (aka my roots). Now, with going from brunette to straight blonde, there are some things that could go very, very wrong. Thankfully, I didn’t have too much trouble, but there are of course things that I wish I knew or things that I learned after going blonde.

I normally only ever wash my hair once a week, because my hair is naturally curly, very fine in texture, and I use heat on it every single day. Before bleaching your hair, if your hair texture is anything like mine, I would recommend going at least five days without washing your hair or using any sort of heat on it.  And of course…DO. YOUR. DANG. RESEARCH! Find a colorist that knows your hair type like the back of his/her hand. Thankfully, my colorist (Jessica at Anthony’s & Co.) is an actual genius and made sure to study my hair and really sit down with me before beginning the process to be sure that there was no miscommunication. I can’t stress enough how important it is to make sure that you and your colorist have a good understanding of the end goal, especially when it’s something as drastic as going from deep brunette to blonde in a matter of three hours.

Obviously, your hair isn’t going to get out scratch-free when you bleach it, so here are some of my favorite products to use when dealing with the aftermath of drastic lightening:

generic value products conditioning purple shampoo

The Generic purple shampoo is honestly a gift from God Himself. The name brand purple shampoo is half the size of this bottle and twice as expensive, but it does the exact same thing. You can get this from your local Sally’s Beauty Supply store and it’s just under $7.00! I use this to combat any brassiness or yellow tones that could be in my hair. When I use this, I run my hair under luke-warm water (avoiding heat damage at all costs now) and *GENTLY lather into my bleached locks. I do this after washing my face and body as to avoid any of it rinsing out. Then, I chill in my bathroom for about 7-10 minutes while the purple tones my hair! Once time is up, I rinse, towel dry, and THEN run conditioner throughout my hair. I know, I know, I put conditioner in my hair AFTER I get out of the shower? Yes, and I leave it in overnight. Shockingly, it’s almost completely soaked into my hair and there is no greasiness.

Screen Shot 2017-11-16 at 7.28.59 PM

ogx nourishing coconut milk anti-breakage serum

Again, this is an extremely affordable product (under $10.00!) and can be found at your local Target! When dealing with post-bleached hair, the second main concern after brassiness is breakage. I love this product because it’s specifically for fighting breakage, it’s lightweight, and it smells freaking GOOD. But seriously, this serum is great for concentrating on certain spots of the hair, specifically towards the ends. I use this on the little wispy bits that hang down when I pull my hair back, the ends of my hair, and the hairs framing my face. These are the sections that took the biggest hit and this serum has honestly made the world of a difference in the health and look of my hair.

For real though, I absolutely LOVE my hair and I am so thrilled with how it turned out! A huge thanks to my insanely talented hairdresser/colorist for making my locks slay the dang game! If you’re ever in Lynchburg and you’re looking for someone to step up your hair game, she’s the one to visit.

XOXO,

Stella

NOVEMBER 2017 MOOD BOARD

I literally cannot believe that it’s already November. Not only is it weird to think that Thanksgiving break is in sixteen days, but that means it’s almost the end of the first semester of my freshman year of college! I’ve had so much room to experiment with my style & creativity, and I thought at the beginning of every month from here on out, I would kick off the month with a mood board filled with everything that is inspiring me for this month! This month I’m really loving and embracing the classic fall color palette, but with a The Stella Files worthy twist: a pop of color (lots of hot pink, red, and orange). I am so excited to play around with different layering patterns, prints, and luxe materials that come with the drop in temperature in my city. Another thing I’m embracing this month (hence the numerous Atticus quotes) is being the warmth in the lives of others during the cold months! It’s just as important to feel as cozy and ready to brace the winds on the inside as it is on the outside.

Another thing keeping me inspired is music. Here’s what I’m listening to this month:

Lil Uzi Vert – “The Way Life Goes”

ASAP Mob – “RAF”

Angus & Julia Stone – “Chateau”

Phoenix – “Entertainment”

Charlie Cunningham – “Lights Off”

The Radio Dept. – “Pulling Our Weight”

Siouxsie & the Banshees – “Hong Kong Garden”

New Order – “Ceremony”

Have a great November, stay inspired, and keep taking epic chances!

XOXO,

Stella

48 Hours in New York City | My Favorite Finds, Sights, Stays, and Eats

Hi readers!
Over fall break, I had the amazing opportunity to go up to New York City to do some exploring and to meet with my friends up at Mogul, one of the largest media platforms for women worldwide. I vlogged my trip on my YouTube channel (go check it out here), but for this blog post I’m going to go into detail of everything we ate, where we stayed, and all about my visit to Mogul!

IMG_1925

My aunt Judy was gracious enough to host my best friend Gillian and I in her breathtaking Upper West Side apartment, and we had the best time. It’s always a great time visiting Judy, who is one of the most fabulous women I have ever met. Her style is eclectic, but chic, and in a simple statement, her apartment is my DREAM! Staying in this apartment brings out my passion and appreciation for interior design, as well as my appreciation for beautiful art. My favorite fixture in Judy’s apartment, aside from all the beautiful plant life, has to be a hand-painted divider from 1929 displayed in her dining area right off of the kitchen. Speaking of the kitchen, Judy whipped up the most incredible cappuccinos for us in the morning, and there is no better way to kick off a day in the city than a bomb-as-heck cappuccino.

Screen Shot 2017-10-11 at 4.29.15 PM

We spent most of our time exploring the city, from Central Park to the East Village and Soho (which has to be my favorite neighborhood). I called this my “Eat, Pray, Love” trip, because it came at a time when I was feeling majorly uninspired and I needed to be back in my city, and we did just that. We ate…and ate…and ate. We stumbled upon what is my new favorite brunch spot, called BoCaphe. This funky, French-girl hotspot with a Vietnamese twist located on Lafayette Street offers everything from fluffy, fruit donned pancakes to the best avocado toast you’ll ever have (on cranberry bread, with an over easy egg on top…I mean, come on). Not only is it super delicious and affordable considering the location, it’s totally aesthetically pleasing. You’ll be sure to leave this sweet spot with a full belly and an even fresher Instagram feed.

Another must-eat stop in the same area as BoCaphe is the Chelsea Market. If you want endless options and amazing cultural exposure, be sure to put this stop on the top of your itinerary. I heard that a must-visit spot in the Chelsea Market is Mok Bar. I didn’t know I had a special spot in my soul for Korean barbecue until eating here, and it was a magical experience. If you go, I highly recommend getting the Bibimbap sliders. They’re filling, not too heavy, and I’ve been craving them ever since I ate them for the first time.

We found ourselves on Lafeyette, which is actually where the shopping is POPPIN’ (but seriously). On this street are some of my favorite stores to go to for funky pieces, which is all I wear anymore. We made sure to stop by & Other Stories and Uniqlo, which I highly recommend checking out! These two stores are ~cool girl~ hot spots, and I actually got some super cool pieces which I’ll be posting a styling video on, so stay tuned! Another must-visit spot for thrifting addicts like myself is The Vintage Twin. This locally owned vintage store is what thrifted dreams are made of, with racks full of carefully curated pieces that are made for one-of-a-kind looks…I thought I had died and went to vintage heaven.

On the topic of clothes and street style, here are some shots of what I wore on my trip and all the details of my look!

I also had an incredible time visiting my Mogul family in the Hearst Tower! I intern with Mogul (onmogul.com), the largest social media & networking platform for women worldwide, as a President of the hub at my university. I was able to tour the offices, meet the founder and CEO, Tiffany Pham, and meet with the Marketing Manager, Danica Daniels. You can see the details of this trip and my visit with Mogul all on my YouTube channel (linked here)! I am so grateful to Mogul for this opportunity and I absolutely loved getting to take a peek at what goes on in the headquarters!

Until next time, NYC…

My Murad | Nightly Skincare Routine

My Murad | Nightly Skincare Routine

Hey readers!

I’m back YET AGAIN with another BOMB-AS-HECK blog post (Stella is working on consistency…and it’s working!) and this is one that I’ve been really excited to share with you all. My friends at Influenster and Murad sent me their acne skincare line with a cult following. This amazing gift from Influenster and Murad consisted of Murad’s Clarifying Cleanser which you can purchase here (also from your local Sephora or their online website), Oil Control Mattifier SPF 15 PA++, and Rapid Relief Acne Spot Treatment. Readers, this gift came at literally the perfect time. I’m midway through my first semester as a college student, and that means less sleep, stress through the roof, and being out with friends all the time! While this is an amazing time in my life and I wouldn’t change a thing, it means my skin is a little more irritable than normal. After trying out Murad for the past month, my skin is in the best condition it has been in months, and my acne was cleared up so quickly. I was so blessed to be able to partner up with this amazing brand through Influenster, and while this is sponsored, I will always give an extremely honest review of the product. I TRULY LOVE what these skincare items have done for my skin! So without further adieu, here’s how I use my Murad!

IMG_1773Of course, I start with my favorite part of my day, how I know that it’s time to relax and unwind, I take my makeup off! Once my face is totally free of makeup, I put a dime-sized amount of Murad’s Acne Control Clarifying Cleanser onto my hands, lather it up, and wash my face. This cleanser is instantly cooling on contact, and it gives such a deep clean. I love using cleansers with Salicylic Acid, a) because it’s the next best thing to Benzoyl Peroxide (which I happen to be highly allergic to), and b) it’s a miracle worker for clearing up acne! I have noticed a significant difference in the quality of my skin since using this cleanser! Not kidding, guys, my skin has never looked and felt cleaner.

Once I’ve washed my face, I pat it dry gently and then prep for a good night’s sleep. FUN FACT: Getting more sleep can result in better skin health! When you are sleep deprived, your body makes more of the stress hormone Cortisol, which results in skin irritation and acne. Sleep is your skin’s time to rejuvenate and heal itself, and I love to give my skin a helping hand by using Murad’s Rapid Relief Acne Spot Treatment. I put this in little dots on my problem areas, which tend to be on my cheeks, my temples, and my forehead. Honestly, I put this on my blemishes and the next day, there is no swelling, and barely any redness. I’m seriously impressed and kind of hooked on this product.

IMG_1778.jpg

Good morning! It’s been a good night’s sleep (for me, just a couple scrolls down the page for you), and I’m ready to prep my face for makeup! So, when I use concentrated Salicylic Acid on my blemishes, it tends to make the area a little dry, so I exfoliate and moisturize to remove any remaining Spot Treatment. I don’t like to use setting powder when I do my makeup because it settles weird on my face, so I’ve just gotten used to dealing with the occasional blotting to control any shine that I accumulate during the day…until Murad gifted me with probably my favorite skincare item in this blog post. The Murad Oil Control Mattifier is the coolest product I have ever used on my skin. I apply my normal moisturizer on my skin, and then apply the Oil Control Mattifier on top, and let it dry before putting my BB Cream on top. It has the texture of Elmer’s Glue (for real though) and then it settles so smoothly on the skin. NO. JOKE. This kept me completely matte ALL DAY LONG. Without setting powder. Truly the trippiest and best product I have ever used and I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to discover it. 11/10, would hecka recommend.

That’s all for my current nightly routine! I want to send a huge hug and major thanks to my friends at Influenster and Murad for seriously hooking a skincare junkie up with some really incredible products! Make sure you head to their site to check it out, and let me know what you think of the products!

XOXO,
Stella
